Icy Straight Point, Alaska

The weather is magnificent! It is hard to believe we are in Alaska. The sun is shining gloriously and it feels warmer than it really is. We are the only ship here and it is so peaceful and so beautiful. The mountains are covered with snow. We got off the ship and walked one and a half miles to the town of Hoona. It is the Alaska of 100 years ago. There is one general store, a gas station, a post office, a bar, an Ace Hardware, a ferry landing and that's about it. The only way in or out is by boat or plane. The airport is a dirt road near the center of town. There is a school and a city hall and a courthouse. There seem to be about 150 residents who don't seem to be doing much. They were in their summer clothes. We walked back the mile and a half to the ship and visited the old fish cannery which has been turned into a museum. There is a nature walk and a path along the beach which was quite nice. There was a zip line which we did not do. The scenery here in Alaska is addicting. The captain says we are very lucky to have such beautiful weather and such calm seas.

This was the most northern port for us and from here on we go south, toward the Hubbard Glacier, Skagway and Juneau.
