Sunday in Werner

We spent the last day at the club playing tennis till we dropped. The courts must be groomed and watered after each match since they are red clay and the members do it themselves. Also everyone plays with everyone else and men and women mix it up. There is no elitist system at all and believe me that they are much better players than anyone we have and that includes anyone. That was so impressive. And they are so nice and extremely helpful. What an eye-opener! I asked and they said it it like that all the time, not just when they have visitors. Anyway, after an exhausting day of tennis we went home to change for the farewell dinner. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that the winning teams have to buy their opponents a round of beer after each match. I am toast!

The Farewell Dinner was wonderful. We ate outside in the middle of the town square on a balmy evening. It stays light here till ten. I had schnitzel with salad and mashed potatoes and Jerry had tagliatelle and turkey. The wine and beer were flowing like rivers. There was much laughter and kind words. There were even some tears.

Today there will be a farewell coffee at the club and they will drive us to our hotel in Düsseldorf. We will catch our flight to Manchester in the morning. There are hundreds of wasps and horse flies in the area since it is in the middle of two huge farms. Needless to say we smell the animals too but the tennis makes up for it.

Well, it's time for my delicious coffee and morning pastry. The breads and cakes are fabulous here and Werne is a small town so everything is fresh and extra tasty.

I think we all will miss each other. I have never been kissed on both cheeks by so many people at one time!
