North Atlantic
The waves are nine feet today since we are in the North Atlantic and that is to be expected. We really don't feel it because the ship is very stable. I slept till 10:30 this morning, had brunch and did my daily walk. It was hard fighting the 30-mile-per-hour winds but I did it anyway. Jerry got up early and came in third in the golf contest. He said everyone else cheated and he should have won. He got a golf ball and some tees as a prize.
Last night we got all dressed up and had dinner at the captain's table with the HR manager. It was really lovely. The wine was fabulous. I drank way to much.
This afternoon we will enter the Mediterranean through the Pillars of Hercules. We should have a clear view of Gibraltar and Spain on one side and Tangier and north Africa on the other. It should be quite a sight!

Atlantic Ocean
We had an unexpectedly good day in Punta Delgada yesterday. We had no real expectations and were therefore pleasantly surprised. The people were very friendly and the city was very pretty. Small black and white cobblestones line the streets. There was no garbage in the streets. There was a lovely well-preserved old town and also a modern shopping mall with free wi fi. We took a ride in a horse-drawn cart, which was really fun. I noticed a huge amount of banks in the center of town as well as a traditional fruit and vegetable market and small local groceries where people come every morning to buy their groceries for the day. I also noticed that many, many people smoke in the Azores. The enclosed areas reeked from cigarette smoke. Nevertheless, it was a very pleasing day.

Punta Delgada, Azores
I am sitting in an internet cafe in the Azores. It's raining but not cold. It is still sort of in the middle of the Atlantic. They speak Portugese here and it was home to pirates in the previous centuries. They have come a long way. There is a university here, a theater, and all other modern conveniences. The downside is that everyone smokes really strong cigarettes and it's pretty nauseating.
The cruise has been great so far. I will be very sad when it ends. More to come.
